Configuration Options not saving via Enterprise Manager
I'm trying to change some Config options via Enterprise Manager, ie
Memory etc..
I can make the change with no problem but when I go back into the
Configuration options the change hasn't taken effect? It looks like the
sysadmin guys have locked down the server but any ideas where to look? If I
do an Sp_Configure <> Then it works fine?
Thanks
Julian
How do you have SQL Server registered in Enterprise Manager? Right clisk on
the server name and choose Edit SQL Server registration properties. Is the
same account that is running sp_configure from Query Analyzer? If the
account you are using is a sysadmin then you should have no problem from
Enterprise Manager.

Configuration of RSreporthost
having used the most of my day trying to do this - i have to ask.
Is there no way to config this tool to get the same permissions as the vs.net preview?
I have a strong name assembly who read the System.Environment.username - and it won't run in the rsreporthost.
Please help me out here..
I've got it right now...
I had a restart (mentally) and now it works.
For the record, I've added a permissionset and a codegroup in the policy config file - and added permission asserts to the code and it works perfect.

Configuration file for reporting server project
Is it somehow possible to create a configuration file for a reporting server
project. Something similar like the web.config or app.config file in .NET
applications?
What I wanna do is to store the link of a picture file. I don't want to
hard-code that in every report.
Are there any other options than storing this link in a config file?

What you could try doing is include a link to a picture file in a
report and then check the XML structure of the underlying RDL file in
a text editor (Notepad, Wordpad, etc). Then change the path in the RDL
file via a custom application that creates the RDL file on the fly.
This might be a bit tedious but it may be the only option.

We are configuring the memory of a server that runs one of our vendors

set the memory as fixed and set its size at half the system memory.

Thanks Paul, thats about what I had figured.
I atleast got what I needed out of it.

Config SQL Server 2000 mail with Outlook 2002
Outlook 2002 installed. The SQL Agent runs under the account
ghs2000\sqlexec.
I logged into this machine as ghs2000\sqlexec and setup a POP3 account
on the machine. Tested sending emails and test mails from SQL Server
and they work fine.
Now we log into the machine as a different user, it's normally logged in
as ghs2000\madmin. And we leave Outlook running. But the emails from
SQL Server never get sent out. They won't get sent out unless we log
into the server as ghs2000\sqlexec and open Outlook 2002.
Any way to set this up so the messages are sent out regardless of who is
logged in? Is this a limitation in Outlook 2002 or would the same thing
happen in Outlook 2002?

This may be happening!
From http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;pl;263556
WARNING: If you attempt to use SQL Mail to establish a connection to a
POP3/SMTP mail server you MUST be able to repeatedly connect and send mail
by using the following steps:
1.. Click the icon that starts the mail client.
2.. Send a message to the same e-mail address listed in the profile so
that you can test both the send and receive capability.
3.. Exit the mail client.
4.. Repeat steps 1 through 3 several times to simulate expected e-mail
traffic.
NOTE: If at any time during this process any dialog boxes appear that
require a response (such as clicking OK to log on) or you are prompted to
enter a password, it will not work with SQL Mail. For an Internet mail
connection to work with SQL Mail, you must have 100% connectivity or SQL
Mail is not usable and you might have to restart your server to clear up the
problem.
The reason for this is that SQL Mail does not provide for retries when
accessing a POP3 account. If SQL Mail cannot connect to the POP3 server on
the first attempt, the Internet Mail Connector normally opens a dialog box
that prompts you to click OK to retry. It that should occur, SQL Mail, which
is running as part of the MSSQLServer service, never sees the dialog box and
stops responding at this point. You might have to stop the Mapisp32.exe
application or even restart your Windows NT computer to clear the problem.
You may be better off using SMTP? http://www.sqldev.net/xp/xpsmtp.htm

> Don't just participate in USENET...get rewarded for it!|||I have Outlook 2K setup for a POP3 acct to work with SQL 2K. Honestly it is
painful to have it works. First thing it doesn't work well if I used
Terminal service, so I have to drive all the way at the midnight to the data
center where we keep our servers to logon physically. Then it never work as
expected. Why? Because emails stucked in the Out folder. I have to logon
as the domain acct that starts up SQL services then the mails are sent out.
I do every thing from MS KB. It works on this server but the others.
Finally it works on all servers but I will never know what made SQL mail
failed at the first time. I follow all steps, one by one, per MS KBs. If
it fails I will just start over, recreate the email profile, set up SQL mail
then it will work after second or third time.
>>Any way to set this up so the messages are sent out regardless of who is
>>logged in?
SQL mail is supposed to work that way. It is the way SQL mails is working
on my SQL boxes now.

Config Help for Server2003/sql2000/iis6 Reporting Services
websites on box above with same ip using host headers (well-established sites
working fine). Installed reporting services, went to one website and created
virtual directories with IIS to same folder/name as items under Default Web
Site. Authentication is set to IUSR_svrname, Integrated Windows on website
and virtual directories.
Created a basic report & deployed to http://serverName/reportServer. I can
view report by url similar
to:http://serverName/Reportserver?%2fFolderName%2freportName&rs:Command=Render Data connection and report retrieval is fine.
But, I need folks to be able to enter the www.domainname.com type of url and
that gives me a HTTP Error 403.8 - Forbidden: DNS name of the client is
rejected. As soon as I remove the report services part of the url, site
pops up fine. And, if possible, I'd like to be able to use more than one of
my domains, just referencing the virtual directory in IIS for each site.
Also, I cannot get to the http://serverName/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx to set
roles and permissions because it only sees me as IUSR and I can't "see"
anything under that role. Even though I'm a domain administrator, believe
it's seeing me as IUSR.
Tried a few things but may be making it worse. Thanks for any advice-would
really like to be able to use this tool, but can't at this point.Update - think I'm really close, but still need help. Uninstalled,
reinstalled RS. Deployed sample. Added <ReportServerExternalURL>
http://www.domainname.org/Reports </ReportServerExternalURL> to
rswebapplication.config Deployed.
Created new role for IUSR_MachineName and gave it browse capabilities on
home folder.
Added virtual directory is IIS under web site above for Reports, with
documents of home.aspx and enable IUSR in IIS for directory. (Deployment is
still okay.) If I view Reports via machinename, site settings are there.
Browse to folder, click on report, the folder pops up again. Report will not
generate. If I view via www, site settings are not there (good, good).
Report does the same thing - popping up another folder view but not
generating.
Added virtual directory is IIS under web site above for ReportServer, with
document sof default.htm, default.asp, index.htm, iisstart.htm, default.aspx.
Same thing happens again.
Think I'm very close. Anybody?|||Finally got a reply on another forum so thought I'd pass it along. Even
though the documentation explicitly says:
"To access a report server on the Internet, you must add a
ReportServerExternalURL configuration setting that specifies the fully
qualified domain name of the report server. The external client uses this
value to access a report server. In this scenario, the browser that is
hosting Report Manager must send a fully qualified domain name when making
requests on behalf of Report Manager to the report server. The following
example illustrates the syntax for ReportServerExternalURL:
<ReportServerExternalURL> reports.adventure-works.com
</ReportServerExternalURL>"
When I replaced the UI with the following, things started rendering properly.
<UI>
<ReportServerVirtualDirectory>/ReportServer</ReportServerVirtualDirectory>
</UI>
Hope it helps out someone else.
Config files get lost...
I created a project with multiple packages. I created a global
config file that all packages reference. I also created a config file
for each package that contains the package specific settings. I
checked it all into TFS. I went to a different machine and checked it
all out. Upon loading a package into the IDE I got the following 3
warnings.
Warning loading MT_LSE_PROD_StageLoad.dtsx: The
configuration file "MT_LSE_PROD_StageLoad.dtsConfig" cannot be found.
Check the directory and file name.
e:\contentloader\sprint1a\MT_LSE_PROD_StageLoad.dtsx

"Environment.dtsConfig" cannot be found. Check the directory and file
name. e:\contentloader\sprint1a\MT_LSE_PROD_StageLoad.dtsx
Warning
loading MT_LSE_PROD_StageLoad.dtsx: Failed to load at least one of the
configuration entries for the package. Check configurations entries and
previous warnings to see descriptions of which configuration failed.
e:\contentloader\sprint1a\MT_LSE_PROD_StageLoad.dtsx
Anyideas? And yes, the files *ARE* there! I tried building the project
and it builds. I also tried doing a deployment build and that too
built. I am so confused!!!

Could it be a permissions issue? I assume the account running the packages has access to e:\contentloader\sprint1a\
-Jamie
|||Not a permission issue. I've granted every account access to the file system (one of the "joys" of being in a dev environment). Also, I see this behavior in VS.NET not SQL. I do a get latest or check out of the project on a brand new dev machine and it is VS.NET giving me the warnings. I compile (ignoring the warnings) and it works just fine. I turn deployment on and build and the deployment directory has the packages and config files. So, they are there and being used - it's VS.NET that's winpering over it...
config file question
In my SSIS packages I'm adding a config file that is storing only the connection strings to the database. Though most of my packages are reading or writing out flat files as well as connecting to a db. Do I need to put both db connection string and flat file connection strings in the config file? I'm currently adding only the db connection due to that will change depending which environment its ran in, unlike the flat file location will always remain the same.
I just want to be sure I don't need both for my package to run successfully.
You can add only 1 or as many configuration values as you want in a single file. As a good practice you should have both values set via configurations; just to cover a possible change in the flat file location. You could also create a separate config file for each property.
Config file issue
I am using package configurations to store connectionstring for my database.
While moving the package from development to production, I used the same configuration files (without changing the connection string to point the database to production one). I ran the package in production and it updated the development database.
Then I changed the config files in production to point it to the production database.
However, the packages are still pointing to dev. database.
It seems that after running the package one in Production, it is not reading the updated config file for subsequent runs.
How to I make sure that the packages now read the latest config files.
Did you specify a full path to the config file?|||Yes, generally with other packages I just update the database name and it works.
Here I forgot to update config file and ran the package in production. Now even if I correct the config file it still uses the old database connection.
|||In the package configurations dialog (wizard), did you specify a FULL PATH to the config file (eg., c:\dir\subdir\YourConfigFile.dtsConfig), or not?|||Yes Phil I have mentioned the full path.|||Do you have any errors when running the package (do you have package logging turned on? If not, do it) that claim the package cannot find the configuration file?Does SSIS have access to the location that the config file is located?|||And how are you running the packages in production?|||I am not getting any errors. The package runs fine but updates the development database which was in the old config file instead of the production one specified in the config file now.|||Again, how are you executing the package in production?|||We run the package by double clicking on the package file and pushing the execute button in production.|||When you do that, you are executing the package from your machine, not production. What version of SSIS do you have installed on your desktop?
You might want to setup a SQL Server Agent job to run the package instead.|||
Hi We have also deployed the package and run it from SQL server management studio but it still points to the old development database....
Our SQL management studio version is :
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 9.00.1399.00
Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools 2005.090.1399.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2000.085.1117.00 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Microsoft MSXML 2.6 3.0 4.0 5.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.42
Operating System 5.1.2600
Setup the package under SQL Server Agent, and then try it.
Just because it is viewed inside SQL Server Management Studio doesn't mean that it is actually EXECUTING there and on the server you are connected to.|||

This issue was resolved. The package had some bug but now its working fine.
Thanks you for your support.
config file contents and deployement
Hi all,
I have few config files with db passwords in them. I have to change passwords daily into that(as my system is in UAT phase now). I have deployed my packages on SQL Server.
My question is , do I need to deploy my packages daily after password updation, or it'll automatically taken care by the SQL Server ?
Thanks in Advance

If you are using package configuration files, you should be able to modify just the config file, and not have to re-deploy the packages.|||thanks for ur response John !!
Can you please tell me how internally it works so that i can have a better picture ?
thanks
|||The topic "Package Configurations" in Books Online explains it much better than I can
Basically, configurations allow you to store settings for your package outside of the pacakge (in a file, a database, env. variables, etc.). At runtime, the package reads the configurations when it first starts up, and uses the values specified in the configuration when it is executing. You can set connection strings, variable values, task properties, and more through configuration.

config file - read connection string
connection string in class. Is it possible to store in some RS config file or
i have to use XML file and read from it?
Thx.Yes, create an appSettings element in the RSReportDesigner.config (design
time), and in the Report Server web.config (runtime). Your custom dll will
be loaded in the host process which will allow you to use
ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings to read its configuration settings.

> Thx.|||I apologize for misleading you about the RSReportDesigner.comfit. It's been
a while since I tried this...so, here is the true story:
1. During runtime the report is generated under the Report Server host
process so the <appSetting> section in web.comfig file should work. Try
rendering a report from the Report which has a textbox with the following
expression:
= System.Configuration.Configuration.Upsetting(<your comfit value>)
. Please note that the web.config file already has a configuration section
so you need to add only the <appSettings> element.
2. During design time it is a bit trickier. Unfortunately, the current
configuration handler of the Report Designer doesn't seem to recognize
<appSettings>. However, you can render the report in debug mode by hitting
F5. This renders the report under ReportHost.exe. To get the config settings
working, create a ReportHost.exe.config in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\80\Tools\Report Designer and place your configuration section there
(the <configuration> element should be spelled with small "c"), e.g.:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<configuration>
<appSettings>
<add key="serverUrl" value="http://localhost/reportserver" />
</appSettings>
</configuration>
b) To get the Preview tab working you could either check for Nothing and
replace that with a default value, or wrap the ConfigSettings.AppSettings
call to default to some default constant values. Once again, this is only
needed during design time. Your runtime report generation shouldn't need
this hack.

Config Error (Oracle 10g Source)
Hello All
I was trying to configure my package. I have a Oracle 10g DB as source. I used "Oracle provider for OLE Db" as provider in connection manager. I entered user name and password.
When I set my package protection level to : DontSaveSensitive and executed the package
it gives me this error:
[Connection manager "WDEV.wuser1"] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "OraOLEDB" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "ORA-01005: null password given; logon denied".
When i go back to connection manager I see the blank password. I retype it but again when I execute I get the above error.
I configured the package with same setting and in the config file I mentioned the passwords and all details but again I when I execute the package i get the below error:
[Connection manager "WDEV.wuser1"] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E21. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft OLE DB Service Components" Hresult: 0x80040E21 Description: "Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.".
Since it was not storing password OR not executing without password I set the Protection Level to : "EncryptAllWithPassword"
and excute it I works Great. and runs Awesome. Except I get this Warning
[OLE DB Source [1]] Warning: Cannot retrieve the column code page info from the OLE DB provider. If the component supports the "DefaultCodePage" property, the code page from that property will be used. Change the value of the property if the current string code page values are incorrect. If the component does not support the property, the code page from the component's locale ID will be used.
Question 1: "CAN I IGNORE THIS WARNING?'
Question2: "THE PACKAGE RUNS GOOD WHEN I SET THE PROTECTIONLEVEL =EncryptAllWithPassword. With this settings when i configure my package it gives me error. Why is it so Any Help please Below plz find the config file?"
[OLE DB Source [1]] Error: The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "WDEV.wuser1" failed with error code 0xC0202009.

Thanks a lotsI had a similar problem with a pair of SSIS running with Oracle. I put "Rely on server storage and.."|||I can help with question number 2.By default SSIS do not stored any sensitive information when the package is saved. That is given by the ProtectionLevel property you find at the package level. You can use a combination of 'package configurations' and/or protection level value to set connection strings and any other dynamic/sensitive data at execution time. This KB article shows 5 methods to get around the issue you are having; I personally used the #4:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918760
I cannot help with the #1 as I haven't worked with SSIS and Oracle at all.
Config error
I get this error. Does any body came across this and found some solution?
Compiler Error Message: CS0433: The type 'Microsoft.Web.UI.ScriptManager' exists in both 'c:\WINDOWS.000\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\websites_hrdbms\3acda2bb\a63d28c5\assembly\dl3\32deaeca\005606e1_3759c601\Microsoft.Web.Atlas.DLL' and 'c:\WINDOWS.000\assembly\GAC_MSIL\Microsoft.Web.Extensions\1.0.61025.0__31bf3856ad364e35\Microsoft.Web.Extensions.dll'
I have created the application with ATLAS July CTP . currently upgraded to ASP.NET AJAX BETA 1. I face the above problem

Wrong forum.
config creating havoc
Each identical apart from the name (dev/prod) [They appear in that order in the 'configurations..' dialog]
I then manually edited the prod config (in notepad) to the correct values (connection string etc)
I then opened the config file in the config edit tool (some time later) to note that my changes had somehow been overwritten. I changed them back to the correct values and saved the prod config.
I then tried building the package.
It returned with numerous validation errors despite 'delay validation' being set to true on each of the tasks that were causing problems (they create temp tables which it cannot validate against)
I then tried running the package.
It errored.
It was trying to connect to production!!
How on earth is this possible?
According to the configuration dialog, the 'dev' configuration is the first one loaded.
I haven't told it anywhere to use 'prod'.
I haven't even (within ssis) managed to even change the values (connection strings) to production.
What is going on here?It would appear that subsequent entries in the 'package configurations organizer' overwrite initials ones.
e.g.
config1 value1=abc
config2 value1=def
the package would have value1=def
so, what exactly is the point of being able to load multiple configurations if it is just going to pick up the last one regardless?|||
The point of superceding configured properties, so far as I use it, to go from generalization to specialization.
A given configuration might be shared by 50 packages. However, for one or two of those packages, the configured value is not appropriate, must be specifialized, and hence, an "subclassed" configuration is added, which overrides the base, or precediing configuration.
|||ok, I can see how that could work but...If I have a package and want to store the connection string for dev/test/prod in the same package, how can I then test this in VS.net?
Other than manually adding and deleting them each time?
also am getting the following error when trying to build:
Creating deployment utility...
Error : System.ApplicationException: Could not copy file "xxxx.dtsConfig" to the deployment utility output directory "yyyyyyy". > System.IO.IOException: The file 'xxxxxx' already exists.
I cannot see any kind of 'overwrite' flag in the project - deploy properties (like you get in reporting services)|||do not add config files into the misc folder in the project - this was causing the 'already exists' error
It obviously decides to deploy all the misc files. How stupid of me to include config files in this folder. They are only completely 100% relevant to the project after all.|||
You don't need to build anything, though. For that matter, deploying is a bit of a stretch as well. The .dtsx and .dtsconfig files are all you need. You can simply copy them to the server via a mapped drive, or use the import (or for that matter, Save Copy As... in BIDS) in Management Studio when connected to Integration Services if you prefer to store packages in MSDB.
As to your question as to dev, test, and prod, simply create three config files, name them slightly differently than each other. Then point your package to an environment-neutral named config file. To test, simply copy one of your dev, test, or prod config files (probably starting with dev) to the name that you have the package pointing to. When you want to switch environments, repeat the process using a different config file this time (perhaps test's file)
Config changes on SQL 2k don't stick.
increase its self by Mbytes as opposed to percent.
But the setting won't stick. You can select it, "OK" close the config
manager and open it back up and its set back to "Percent".
Yes, I have rights and I did select OK and we booted the machine
several times.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Sid.1) What account are you using to make this change?
2) What release of SQL Server are you using?
3) How are you trying to implement this change (EM, QA?)
4) Are there any messages in either the SQL Server or server event
logs that suggest anything?
5) Was this database originally created on the server or was it
transferred from another server or a different version of SQL Server
(e.g. 7.0)?

Try setting the growth options using ALTER DATABASE instead of the GUI...
Tracy McKibben
MCDBA
http://www.realsqlguy.com|||We did find that on one of our test servers we were experiencing the
same problem that we could make the change stick through the GUI by
just selecting the "growth by Mbytes" and not changing the amount
setting away from "1 meg" until after a boot. It just shouldn't be that
way ...
We'll try it on the live server today.
I'll try the "Alter " command next.
Thanks
Sid.
