Configuration file for dts package
I am building a DTS pakage to read from a text file and Populate a SQL
Server table. I am using the Enterprise manager to build the package.
I wanted to know if there is a way where I can specify information like the
path of the source text files, Login/pwd,server name of the detination
server in a separate "configuration file".
The reason I am looking for this is that I might need to move my packages to
different severs who may have different name and login/pwd. Also I dont want
to hadrcode the source file path in the package.
I think It is possible with UDL files but I dont know how.
any suggestions will be highly appreciated.
Cheers,

your package a populate global variables.

You could make use of Dynamic Properties task, .ini files.

Configuration
I have a sql server database (1 table, 500.000 records with 10 fields and
full text search index) and an ASP.NET website (IIS).
What is a good harware configuration ?
A P4 3.2 Ghz and 1 Go RAM is enough for sql server and IIS or do i need to
have sql server running on is own server ? Or 2 Go RAM ?
Thanks.
Sorry for the consulting answer but "It depends". You don't mention any
response time expectations, expected usuage, size of the IIS site, or any
availability requirements.
In general, a production SQL Server should have two or more processors.
Memory is generally very cheap and more is better.

Conditionaly hiding rows in a table in a single datagroup
I have a report which takes data from a stored procedure and then reveals
some text on a row depending on whether or not a bit is true. The data coming
from teh stored procedure is a single row for a contact, and it displays a
number of rows in the report.
When we run the report into a PDF the data is all tidily on one page,
however in the web browser it is only showng 4 database rows per page (even
if there is only one additional line being displayed), this is because there
are so many rows (10), though the data isnt spaced out it is all at the top
of the report. Is there a way of getting more data to display in the report ?
Many Thanks
ChrisHi Chris,
I understood you would like to hide rows in a table, however I am not sure
in what condition you would like to hide the row? Would you please provide
us some detailed scenario examples?
Sincerely yours,
Michael Cheng

Conditionally Expand a Table
where the table may contain 1 to n number of rows. When the table has 4 or
more rows the page looks well balanced but anything less makes it look too
compressed.
I would like to conditionally add some blank table rows and have been
attempting this by adding rows and setting the visibility property using
RowCount(). Problem is I have 2 groups in this table so have separate row
counts. I did a test and added RowCount() to a text box in the table header
and it shows the total for the entire table. Is there a syntax for RowCount
that will allow me to reference the header RowCount from each of the group
row visibility properties?
Or is there a better way to set a minimum table size?
Thankstry putting your items inside of a rectangle as a group - I think your table
will expand and contract within the bounds of the rectangle and keep your
text boxed on either side too.

conditional split problem
I have been transfering data from text file to sql databases.
I have a conditional split where i check to if the address has changed for a particular person. If yes i direct to update else i direct to default output which means no change.
when i connect error output of conditional split to a database or union all couple of rows are directed to error output. But i dont understand the reason. How would i be able to know why they r directed to error.
Please let me know.
When the rows are sent to the error output they should have two new columns (ErrorCode and ErrorColumn) added to them. To determine the cause of the error, I would start by looking at these values, and then researching the code(s) that they contain.|||This is a way of doing what Matthew suggested:
By default every error output in your dataflow will add a couple of columns: ErrorNumber and error column. The you can use script task to get the description of the error. Jamie has an explanation of that on his blog:

Conditional Formatting Question
This is what I've tried to take care of the scores:
=IIf(Fields!Score.Value <= 159 and Fields!Score.Value > 100,"Red", "Green")
Two issues:
I want all other scores (< 100) to be Black and
I'm not sure how to deal with the state abbreviations. I'm assuming this is why I receive this error:
[rsRuntimeErrorInExpression] The Color expression for the textbox ‘Score’ contains an error: Input string was not in a correct format.
Preview complete -- 0 errors, 1 warnings
All data is stored as varchar.
Hello,
Yes, the reason you get that warning is because your field is stored as varchar. I think this will do what you want, you can add additional conditions for different colors.
=Switch(
IsNumeric(Fields!Score.Value) and cInt(Fields!Score.Value) >= 160, "Green",
IsNumeric(Fields!Score.Value) and cInt(Fields!Score.Value) > 100, "Red",
1=1, "Black"
)

Conditional formatting on a text box
I have a report that I need to duplicate in RS. What I'm trying to do is put
some conditional formatting on my detail textboxes.
I want the text to be bold if the field = certain things. ie. If the line
detail on the report = "Invoiced Sales", "Trade Sales", "Net Sales"..etc I
need that line to be bolded.
I'm trying to use an IIF statement as an expression for the textbox's
Format/FontWeight property, but am having trouble compiling.
Here's what I've tried:
=IIF(Fields!linedetail.Value = "NET INCOME", fontweight = BOLD, fontweight = NORMAL)
=IIF(Fields!linedetail.Value = "NET INCOME", BOLD, NORMAL)
Of course, I will eventually need to convert this into some kind of OR
statment because there are 7 different possible line details that should be
bolded.
I appreciate any help you could give. Thanks in advance!
-KellyHi Kelly
I have found the following works.
= iif(rtrim(Fields!ObjectCode.Value) = "Your text", "Bold","Normal")
But is has to go in the "FontWeight" property area.

example:
=Switch(Fields!linedetail.Value="Trade Sales", "Bold",
Fields!linedetail.Value="Invoiced Sales", "Bold",
Fields!linedetail.Value="Net Sales", "Normal")

Conditional Formatting - text to text
My query returns numbers for months. Can I use conditional formatting to
convert a 1 into Jan, 2 into Feb, ect?
I know that there is a way to do this within the query itself, but am
curious as to the conditional formatting way. Thanksabunch. You could use the MonthName function to achieve this effect in the report:
=MonthName(CInt(Fields!Month.Value))

Conditional Formatting
Does anyone know how I can have conditional formatting in my reports?
What I want to achieve is something like. If the field text = "Green" make
the background green, etc
Thanks alot in advance
Ruse the iif function for the font color. Reporting Services accepts
expressions for most of its properties.
=iif(boolean condition, "red", "black")

Thanks that worked great, just one problem,
There is 4 possibilities. it can either be red, green, yellow or blue..
I tried this:
=iif( Fields!Shift.Value = "Green", "LawnGreen", "transparent")
else
=iif( Fields!Shift.Value = "Red", "Red", "transparent")
else
=iif( Fields!Shift.Value = "Yellow", "Yellow", "transparent")
else
=iif( Fields!Shift.Value = "Blue", "Blue", "transparent")
endif
but that don't quite help it. Any ideas?

syntax you are trying to use. Is your logic something like this: if the value
of the Shift textbox is "green", "blue", "red" or "yellow", make the color of
this the same, otherwise make it transparent? if so, you need
=iif(Fields!Shift.Value="green" or Fields!Shift.Value = "blue" or
Fields!Shift.Value = "red" or Fields!Shift.Value = "yellow",
Fields!Shift.Value, "transparent")
or are you trying to make a distinction between green and lawngreen, in
which case you could nest a second iif function like so:
=iif(Fields!Shift.Value = "blue" or Fields!Shift.Value = "red" or
Fields!Shift.Value = "yellow", Fields!Shift.Value, iif(Fields!Shift.Value ="green", "lawngreen", "transparent"))
both of the above should work.

I figured it out, it was kind of simple really, just had to click. The
field "shift" only displays the words "red", "blue", "green" or "yellow".
So if that is the only words which are displayed, then obviously the
expression to be used as the background is =Fields!Shift.value
but your input made me click, thanks alot

Hello!

--=_NextPart_000_0014_01C535DC.35B57990--I haven't tried this yet, but from using Report Services so far... the only
functions recognized in expressions for fields and such are global VB
Functions. So I think that's why RowNumber doesn't work, but I could be
wrong.
Maybe you could try putting your subtotals in a different matrix with a
query that actually calculates the subtotals... and also with said query add
the row numbers (using identity or whatnot) and use those for your formatting
expression.

How do I get a row to display conditionally? For example below - I = don't want the shirts row to display because it's zero. I'm using = Report Builder against a Cube:
Products: Qty:
shoes 5
shirts 0
gloves 10

I'm not sure if this will work in your scenario, but in a standard
SSRS report you could use an expression like this in the Value
property of the table cell/etc:
=iif(Fields!Qty.Value = 0, Nothing, Fields!Qty.Value)
Hope this helps.

Conditional Data Inserting
My project import data from à text file to a database. I'm able to import the whole file but i want to import only if data are younger than the one i have in database.
How can i do ? Where can i see a tutorial about it ?
thanks a lotDo both the source rows and the database rows have a date that can be compared. If so then you could use either a lookup or a mergejoin to get the two dates into the same data flow (by lookup or join on some key that indicates the rows are matched) and then use a conditional split to send the rows you want to update to a OLEDB command transform with the appropriate update statement (or if you do indeed want to insert the data not update then just send it to an OLEDB destination).
Thanks,
Matt|||There's a tutorial here that compares merge join and lookup components. Its not exactly the same as your situation but it may help!!
-Jamie|||Thanks it is very useful !
But i'm still blocked because in some case i need to insert, and in other case i need to update...|||Ash has a great post on upserts here:

Give that a shot.

conditional color property based on date
Here is my code that is not working:
=IIf(DateAdd('m', -6, Fields!Orig_expireDate.Value) <
Now(), "red", "black")Use " instead of '
( ' is a comment for vb, even in reporting services)

Condensed Data Type
(SQL Server 2000 or later.) Displays text describing this column. To edit the description, select the property, click the ellipsis ( ) that appears to the right of the property value and edit the description in the Description Property dialog box.
Is what the SQL Server documentation says for ‘Condensed Data Type’. I do not understand the design idea behind this property? What is the necessity of this property?
‘Data Type’ and ‘Length’ properties are already used to describe the ‘Condensed Data Type’.
Thank you,
Smith
My guess is that this is for those who perfer to write varchar(20) instead of first specifying varchar, then in some other place saying 20.|||any other thoughts, please?
Thank you,
Smith

Concating text columns
I want to select that column and add some text to the result
e.g.
select textcolumn + 'Added Text' From xTable
but this fails because one can not use + or concat on text columns
i get around this by using cast as varchar(1024)
e.g.
select cast(textcolumn as varchar(1024)) + 'Added Text' From xTable
but this would cut the text column after 1024 chars
is there a way around this and not limiting the length of the text columnI'm at home and not a work at the moment so I can't check for sure (or rather I'm not going to), but can't you omit the length of the varchar in the cast statement??|||select cast(textcolumn as varchar) + 'Added Text' From xTable
or
select convert(varchar, textcolumn) + 'Added Text' From xTable
works for my SQL2000, otherwise, you can just trim out the trailing spaces|||Just be aware that the max length of varchar is 8000.

Concatenation of Text
The MDAC infrastructure was never meant to handle BLOBs, so trying to update a TEXT column in a million rows at once is really a bad idea. I'd either change the column datatype, or find a different way to acheive the same goal.
This just sounds like a problem sniffing eagerly at a new victim to me!
-PatP|||Thanks Pat. Unfortunately, I have to use a TEXT column because the data can exceed the 8k limit for VARCHAR and CHAR. I guess my choices are to use DTS and some sort of ActiveX script, write a script to concatenate before it hits the database, or do the unthinkable and write a cursor (although I don't really want to do that).
Dandy|||Nothing quite like being caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, is there? Given those choices, I'd opt for DTS.
Actually, cursors aren't logically bad, it is just that their performance is awful compared to set operations. Many databases like Oracle and Z-Series DB2 rely on cursors to do much of anything.
Be forewarned though, TEXT manipulation is slower than other datatypes. Just retrieving or storing a row with a TEXT or IMAGE column takes a lot longer than it does without those columns.
-PatP|||Of course it does, doh...First it needs to get the pointer (binary(16)), then retrieve 8K worth of data stored in a separate set of pages which results in at least 1 additional IO per row retrieved. BLOBs are wonderful (hehehe) when used for what they were invented, - not for set-based operations. And this is one of the few cases when a cursor may very well be applicable.
The MDAC infrastructure was never meant to handle BLOBs...Really? Who told you that?|||Really? Who told you that?It was either the guy who invented DTS, or the GPM for MS-SQL 7.0. They were both there, I just don't remember who actually said it and who just nodded sagely.
-PatP|||Oh, I see, and I'm an airplane :D|||I'm a teapot! I'm a teapot!
