Configure IIS for Reporting Manager and reporting server site

Dear All:

My reporting manager and reporting server were working fine in IIS. But when I booted the system one day, one error message came "Unexpected error" for the IIS. So I removed the IIS and reinstalled he same.

But after that, I tried to give virtual directories to reporting manager and reporting server sites. But it ain't working. Could you please help me?

My IIS 5.1
Reporting service 2005 Express with SQL Server Express
ASP.NET 2.0 Express.

Please help.

Thanks in Advance

Emmanuel MathewDear All:

I got it somehow worked. But now the problem is that when I take the report manager and display the report, it shows me a wrongly formatted page with "Object reference not set to an isntance of an Object"

But in server, even though I am getting the unformatted (Like CSS is not applied), I get the report correctly. Is there anything wrong with the ath of CSS?

And what is this "Object reference error"? Could you please help me.

Thanks
Emmanuel Mathew|||Can you tell us the stack trace in report service log file? Also is there any error in the reporting services configuration tool (not sure if it comes with RS express)?|||Dear Friend:

There is no error screen to take a stack trace. Let me explain. When I give the URL, the reporting manager comes nicely. Then when I click on one of the report, usually, the parameter and the view report button should appear. It appears. But they are all mis aligned. And when Press on the view report, the image which shows the processing rotates and then shows the error in a single line "Object reference not set to an instance of an Object"

When I open the reporting server, I get the directory listing and then when I click on one of the report, the report comes mis aligned as in report manager. But when I click on the view report, it shows the report even though its looking ugly. I get the error only in reporting manager.

Let me tell you what had happened earlier too. One day when I opened the machine, my IIS got an unexpected error and it did not start. SO I reisntalled the same. After reinstalling, I saw that the reporting manager and the server virtual folders are gone. So I created the same and ran the command Reg IIS to register IIS for the ASP.NET 2. I have .NET, sql server and the reporting services which are all express editions installed in the machine. Everything was working fine till I find one day my IIS got corrupted.

Lot of thanks for the support. And thanks in Advance.

Emmanuel Mathew|||I reinstalled IIS and the server stated working fine now. I know its not the solution. But I made it working. Thanks a lot for your help.

Configuration Order

I am trying to use the SQL Agent to specify the connection properties of the connection manager that supports all of the other SQL Configurations in my packages.

It would appear that configuration files specified in the SQL agent job are applied after the other configurations. I have the same package I want to use under different configurations on the same machine. This package is also portable across to other machines. so cannot have any location information embedded in the package.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Are indirect configs an option? I have never used sql configs but I believe you can store the location of the configs in an environment variable. In this situation all you need to do is update an environment variable.

I would still need to be able to set a modifier to say which configuration location I wanted to use.

I have the same package that I can use to load the same file from different customers. Obviously I want the data to end up in different databases, possibly even onto different servers. So far I have a seperate SQL configuration database for each customer, however I can only tell the package to look at one configuration database, even if I use indirect configuration, per server. And their lies the only answer I have at the moment have one configuration per server, instead of managing multiple customers in different services on the same hardware.

It would have been nice to be able to set the connection string for the configuration database from outside the SSIS package and have it applied before the other configurations kicked in. The effect I get at the moment is even though I use SQL Agent to set the connection string of the connection maanger I am using to access the SQL configuration, it seems to be applied after the other configurations are set and subsequently the other SQL configurations do not know where to get their properties from.

I hope I am wrong about this, and I have just missed something simple.

|||

I understand your problem; but not sure about the solution. Have you tried the 'SET' option available in the DTEXEC utility to override the connection string that points to your configuration table? For this you would have to use a CmdExec step in your SQL Server agent (which BTW gives you better logging information)

|||I have tried DTEXEC and using the SET options in SQL Agent, however it would also appear that these are applied after the internally specified configurations.|||

Philip Coupar wrote:

At some point, are you using in your packages 'Parent Package variable' for setting any of the configurations? If so, that may be the problem. There is a bug with configurations using 'parent package variables'.

I am currently using XML file to set up the connection string of my SQL Server configuration table with no problem; I have done the same using Environment variables; if this is what you are doing the problem must be something else.

|||

I had started out using Parent Package configuration until I discovered that small issue.

I now have an XML configuration file, which is working fine. However I would like to have the same packages used in multiple configurations on the same machine even using indirect configuration I can only point my packages to one xml configuration file, and even if I try to override the xml configuration file by using configurations in SQL Agent that is only apllied after the original configurations have been applied and subsequently my internal SQL configurations are missed.

It would be nice if configurations applied in SQL Agent were applied first or you could specify the order in which ALL of the configurations both internal and external were applied.

It would also be nice if parent package configurations applied in the order they were presented and not last as they do at the moment, in fact I think they are applied after validation.

|||

Phil,

There are valid reasons for the order in whch configs are applied and I read a blog psot on it once except that I can't remember where. I think parent package configs are deliberately applied at a different time to all the others - but I can't remember why. Sorry.

Defining the order in which configurations are applied sounds like a good idea to me. Perhaps you could suggest it at Connect?

Jamie, it would be interesting to read that explanation. Actually there is an active bug open at connect:

No matter where you place it in the package configuration organizer; it would be set last... May be it is a difference in opinions

Configuration Options not saving via Enterprise Manager

Hello,
I'm trying to change some Config options via Enterprise Manager, ie
Memory etc..
I can make the change with no problem but when I go back into the
Configuration options the change hasn't taken effect? It looks like the
sysadmin guys have locked down the server but any ideas where to look? If I
do an Sp_Configure <> Then it works fine?
Thanks
Julian
How do you have SQL Server registered in Enterprise Manager? Right clisk on
the server name and choose Edit SQL Server registration properties. Is the
same account that is running sp_configure from Query Analyzer? If the
account you are using is a sysadmin then you should have no problem from
Enterprise Manager.

Configuration Manager ?

Each time you start a SSIS project you have Solutions Configuration showing "Development". In the drop down box you can select "Configuration Manager..."

Can someone tell me the use of this, and is it related to the package configurations somehow. I've tried to create new Solution Configurations like "Test" and "Production" with the purpose of binding different configuration files and deplymentfolders to each Solution Configuration but still it seems like this isn't the way i should be used...

This is something inherent to Visual Studio rather than BIDS or SSIS. It doesn't have any relevance to package configurations that we know and love (!!!).

I don't know how this VS feature is supposed to be used so I say whether it would be useful for SSIS or not. I'd like to know though!!!

-Jamie

|||

The only thing i could see any use of this was to create 3 enviroments - Development, Test and Production.

I each of those i'll set the outputpath to bin\Development, bin\Test, bin\Production

So when i build the package i can choose the enviroment to build it to so that i can keep those files sepperate....

|||

Is there a way to reference the current value within a variable ?

This would be helpfull for having the servername depend on the selected configuration.

Thanks in advance,

Geert

|||

What you are asking and what cpgl described seems totally unnecessary if you only use the built in Configuration support for SSIS. Things like file paths are server names should be changed through configurations, not coded into the package during "build".

I would expect each environment to have the required configiration resources in place, so there should be nothing to change in the package to prepare it for an environment. If you do change the package between environments it just defeats the purpose of having a test environment as what you tested is not what you will then promote to production. It may be a minor change, but being strict, no changes should be allowed.

The only exception I can see is when environments are combined on machines, and for that I'd recomend passing in a parameter through the execution host, e.g. DTEXEC /SET

Configuration Manager - which configuration type to chose ?

It seems to me, that the best way is to have one Environment Varible containing the name of the SQL Server, so that you can look up the configuration in the SSIS Configuration Table when you run the package.

Is this the preferable way of doing it ? I would like to hear some positive/negative comment of why chosing a configuration type instead of another.

It seems to me that putting all of the configuration in the Environment variable is harder work but most secure (server breakdown vs table corruption/database error...)

Let's have some comments

Configuration file for dts package

Hi all,
I am building a DTS pakage to read from a text file and Populate a SQL
Server table. I am using the Enterprise manager to build the package.
I wanted to know if there is a way where I can specify information like the
path of the source text files, Login/pwd,server name of the detination
server in a separate "configuration file".
The reason I am looking for this is that I might need to move my packages to
different severs who may have different name and login/pwd. Also I dont want
to hadrcode the source file path in the package.
I think It is possible with UDL files but I dont know how.
any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

your package a populate global variables.

Configuration Error - MS CRM

We have the MS CRM installed on the same machine as our Report Server.
Sometimes (infrequently) when accessing the report manager

server which is running CRM & Reporting Services.
Teo, I tried looking into the rssrvpolicy.config file like you suggested,
and I see Sharepoint, but I'm not sure how I would add the CRM assembly.
There's a PublicKeyBlob field which I have no idea how I find that for CRM:
<CodeGroup
class="UnionCodeGroup"
version="1"
PermissionSetName="FullTrust"
Name="SharePoint_Server_Strong_Name"
Description="This code group grants
SharePoint Server code full trust. ">
<IMembershipCondition

What changes would I make to the above XML Node to change it from Sharepoint
to CRM?

See if this works for you:
1. Open C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\CONFIG\security.config.
2. Locate and copy the entire <CodeGroup> element for
microsoft.crm.platform.types.dll.
3. Now open C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Reporting
Services\ReportManager\rsmgrpolicy.config and add the <CodeGroup> element.
If you cannot find microsoft.crm.platform.types.dll in security.config, use
caspol to get its publickeyblog as follows:
CASPol -all -resolveperm microsoft.crm.platform.types.dll
Hope this helps.

Thank you so much!!!! It looks like that has solved the problem (after
wasting a support incident with Microsoft so they could tell me that
Reporting Services and Crystal Reports can't be installed on the same
machine, and to uninstall Reporting Services to fix the error--is there any
way to get a refund on a support incident?).
The .dll for CRM was not in the security.config file, so I had to find the
assembly--in case anyone else has a hard time finding it, it is in the
assembly cache on the machine (c:\%windows%\assembly). The physical location
on my machine was
C:\WINNT\assembly\GAC\Microsoft.Crm.Platform.Types\1.2.3297.0__31bf3856ad364e35
I ran caspol on that assembly, copied the whole <codegroup> ... </codegroup>
element from the Sharepoint entry in the rsmgrpolicy.config and replaced the
publickeyblog value with the value returned by Caspol. This is the first
time since installing Reporting Services that I have been able to access both
CRM and the Report Manager at the same time, before either one or the other
would always give the error.
I am still getting another error, though, when I try to access certain pages
in Report Manager:
SQL Server Reporting Services
Error
The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship
with remote server.
I have seen other people say they get this error and it has something to do
with certificates. We are using a home-made certificate on that server since
it is only for internal use, so we install the certificate into the browser's
root certificates and we don't have any problems accessing the site
internally. How would I get around this in Report Manager?|||Joel,

I tried the way you have indicated, but unfortunately it seems not to work.
Its highly possible that I may be making a error. I would appreciate if you
can give me some direction here.

Concurrent Backup/Restores

Can I have multiple instances of Enterprise Manager running while each one
is processing a backup or restore. How will this affect performance. I am
trying to restore several large databases and do not want to have to do this
sequentially if if possible. Does it make any difference if I am running EM
on different PCs?
TIA
Rob
Don't use EM, use QA instead along with the BACKUP and RESTORE commands. You
will be limited only by processor and disk bandwidth.
